I think of this piece as trying to express something of the continuing unstoppable force of nature, just as tree roots can be seen cracking open paving stones for example.
It was made at the time of the start of the Iraq Gulf War when, despite the geographical distance between the British Isles and the Middle East, there was a noticeably changed atmosphere of paranoia and vulnerability which possibly prompted the work.
